Executive Opportunity: Head of Finance and Planning - National Film and Sound Archive of Australia

Head of Finance and Planning
National Film and Sound Archive of Australia

  • Newly created leadership role in Canberra

  • Shape the future of a national cultural icon at a pivotal moment of transformation and investment

  • Drive innovation in finance, systems, and commercial strategy

The National Film and Sound Archive of Australia (NFSA) is the nation’s premier audiovisual archive, dedicated to collecting, preserving and sharing Australia’s rich and diverse audiovisual heritage. As it continues to transform into a forward-looking, digitally enabled institution, they are seeking an imaginative and problem solving Head of Finance and Planning (HoFP) to help lead this next chapter.

This newly created role will report to the Deputy CEO and work closely with the Senior Executive Team to drive strategic financial planning, operational excellence and enterprise wide performance. The HoFP will also serve as the NFSA’s Chief Risk Officer, overseeing finance, legal, procurement and compliance functions.

With a budget of $40-50 million, multiple projects and investments, including a landmark digitisation program of $41.9 million over four years, the HoFP will play a critical role in ensuring the NFSA’s systems, processes and culture are aligned with its strategic goals, and that the organisation is making informed, data-driven decisions to maximise the impact of government funding while pursuing new commercial opportunities.

We are seeking a financially astute, emotionally intelligent, and future-focused leader. You may be a smart, hungry CFO ready to step into a broader operational role, or a multi-skilled executive with a strong finance foundation and a passion for cultural impact. This is a sensitive and high-impact role, requiring someone who can lead a small team with empathy, clarity, and confidence. You’ll be joining a tight-knit, flat-structured executive team that is supportive, curious, and fun. CPA or CA qualifications are essential.

Your financial planning and strategy experience could be gained from the Australian Government or adjacent sectors such as media, broadcasting, arts, culture or consulting. To be eligible to apply you must be an Australian citizen and complete a Police Check and Australian Government Baseline Security Clearance.
