Yarra Trams in Melbourne is the largest light rail network in the world operating on behalf of the State of Victoria through a franchise arrangement. Our guiding principle is to ‘think like a passenger’. We focus on delivering safe, reliable, clean, and easy-to-use services. We are committed to increasing the environmental, social, and economic contribution that Melbourne’s tram network makes to the city.
As a pivotal part of realising this remit, Yarra Trams is seeking to appoint a new Director, Human Resources, to provide HR leadership for the organisation. The new CEO has launched transformation initiatives which includes a people strategy and a cultural transformation program aimed at strengthening the focus of the company on its’ people. Reporting directly to the Chief Executive, the Director, Human Resources will lead the design and development of this people strategy and cultural transformation program. They will also be responsible for planning, developing, managing and implementing the HR strategy and policy, across workplace relations and health programs that support the Yarra Trams business plans.
The key challenge is to develop a comprehensive people management strategy that supports a high performance organisational culture focused on customers, teamwork, collaboration and efficiency within a dynamic environment subject to ongoing structural, cultural and technological change. A further challenge relates to managing sensitive industrial relations issues impacted by risk and public perception issues. The role will partner closely with the business to drive transformational change of both structural and cultural dimensions, working with a complex set of stakeholders, both internal and external.
To meet the demands of this critical role, candidates will need to have deep experience at a leadership level in human resources, industrial relations, safety and compliance, gained in organisations of scale and complexity. A proven history of driving transformational change which has delivered a culture of accountability and performance is required, together with a proactive safety culture within an operational business, either in Government or industry. Strong leadership, influencing and negotiation skills are important, with the ability to manage a complex set of stakeholders, both internal and external, supported by sound business acumen.
