Webinar - Your Oxygen Mask First: Prioritising Yourself in Your Lifelong Career Journey

Unlock the secret to longevity planning!

The next webinar in Watermark's Masterclass Series for 2023 explored the expansive subject of longevity, with a focus on how individuals and organisations can thrive in an era of longer lives.

Caroline McAuliffe, Senior Partner at Watermark, opened the webinar by expressing gratitude for past webinars and introduced the day's esteemed speaker, Natalie Yan-Chatonsky, CEO of Full Time Lives and author of "Art of Full Time Living."

The Essence of Longevity Planning

Before delving into the webinar's content, Caroline emphasised the importance of addressing financial independence, meaningful work, and overall well-being at all stages of life.

The discussion then moved to the current state of affairs. Caroline highlighted the global shift towards longer working lives, citing research from the World Economic Forum. She also noted the results of the Interim Executive Survey, revealing that organisations should be recognising the need to refresh their attraction and retention strategies, targeting a broader age range of employees and encouraging sabbaticals.

The traditional linear career path model is evolving. People are planning for a portfolio of work that may include interim executive roles, contracting, part-time work, volunteering, and more.

Caroline then went through Watermark Search's “longevity formula” to help organisations and individuals alike develop a “longevity plan” based on our research and collectively lived experience. You can download this formula in our 2023 Annual Interim Executive Survey here.

Natalie Yan-Chatonsky's Journey

Natalie shared her personal journey of designing a purposeful life, emphasising meaningful work that generates income and allows her to maintain her well-being and engage in lifelong learning. She accidentally embarked on her longevity quest in her late 40s, and she's never been in better shape or earned as much since finding her purpose.

Drawing from her research in Blue Zones, Natalie highlighted the significance of social connections, community, and curiosity in promoting longer, healthier, and happier lives.

The 5 Key Ingredients for the Art of Full Time Living

Natalie then discussed the "5 key ingredients" and the importance of these aspects in longevity including:

  • Visualise your future

  • Connect with inspiring people

  • Explore your purpose with others

  • Run short experiments

  • Continuous improvement

Adapting Organisations to a Multi-Generational Workforce

The discussion then touched upon how organisations can adapt to the changing dynamics of a multi-generational workforce. This included:

  • Co-design and inclusive culture

  • Foster deep multi-generational connections and purpose-led communities

  • Give flexibility and space for staff to lead a "Full Time Life"

The Watermark webinar on longevity provided valuable insights into how individuals and organisations can thrive in an era of longer lives. It encouraged participants to take proactive steps toward financial independence, meaningful work, and well-being at all stages of life. The event exemplified the commitment of Watermark to provide practical and actionable advice to its audience, ensuring they can navigate the complexities of today's evolving career landscape.

Happy longer life planning everyone!
