These roles will form an essential part of the Institute’s Senior Executive Leadership team. The ideal candidates will have highly developed representational and negotiation skills, be experienced leaders who value and empower their teams, demonstrate excellent communication skills and are committed to the values of the Institute. There is flexibility with location, the preference being Townsville, followed by Perth, Darwin or Canberra.
Director, Research and Data Science (Ref: 69681)
Guided by the CEO, the Director will plan and lead AIMS’ Research and Data Science Program comprising AIMS’ Research Office, Data Systems Engineering and Knowledge Systems Teams.
Establish and implement a vision for AIMS’ data systems to allow increased scaling and automation of science. Seek to transform data into meaningful products for research, environmental management and the production of decision support models. Influence and participate in national and international research data initiatives.
The successful applicant could come from similar research bodies around the world, within government or the private sector, or businesses which are technology or data savvy such as telecommunications or technology. Candidates will need to provide evidence of relevant technical/business qualifications, supplemented by extensive experience in strategic data infrastructure management, delivery and uptake. Strategic leadership experience in a sophisticated operating environment and experience in managing complex data platforms are considered essential. Candidates will need to demonstrate honed capabilities in strategic leadership alongside strong emotional intelligence.
Chief Operating Officer (Ref: 69685)
Supporting the CEO in planning and managing the affairs of the Institute. The COO will lead the optimal utilisation of the human, financial and physical resources available to ensure effective and efficient delivery of services relating to infrastructure and operational support. This includes operational support on vessels, SeaSim aquarium and diving operations. AIMS is in a growth phase and this role will oversee the development of the SeaSim facility, design and build of two new vessels, and upgrading of infrastructure and buildings. Contract negotiation and management experience is considered essential as is experience providing operational support to the business. Strategic safety leadership is a critical focus for the role.
The successful applicant is expected to have relevant experience in infrastructure and/or major vessels operations and management. Experience promoting and delivering a safe work environment is essential, as is balancing risk and reward and managing complex contracts.
