An outstanding leader for an outstanding organisation.

The NSW State Emergency Service (NSW SES) provides immediate assistance to communities across NSW at their time of greatest need, when they are affected by an emergency.

The NSW SES is an emergency and rescue service which relies on 9,000 volunteers in 229 units who are dedicated to helping their communities at a time of crisis.  There is a core staff which provides direction and support to the organisation.

The NSW SES works closely with the other emergency services and is the primary emergency response agency for flood, storm and tsunami operations and provides the majority of rescue effort in rural parts of NSW, including road accident rescue, remote and land search and rescue, and other forms of specialist rescue.

The Commissioner provides leadership and direction to the NSW SES.  He or she provides advice to the Minister on strategic planning and, during an emergency, briefs the Minister and Premier on critical issues.

An important part of the role also is to work with the media, police and other stakeholders to maintain the significant reputation which the NSW SES enjoys in the community.

You will have experience at a senior executive level in a large scale field operations organisation.  It would be desirable for you to have some experience of emergency management and disaster prevention, coupled with an understanding of the needs of communities and regions affected by natural and man-made disasters. And with volunteers being the core of the NSW SES, you will have an understanding of the leadership requirements and challenges involved in motivating and directing a substantial volunteer workforce and in keeping them safe. Great emphasis is placed on understanding the volunteer ethos of the organisation and valuing the enormous contribution which volunteers make.
