Enhancing rail safety through effective risk-based regulation
The Office of the National Rail Safety Regulator (ONRSR) is an independent body established in 2012 to encourage and enforce safe railway operations, promote and improve national rail safety, and provide regulatory oversight of rail safety in every Australian state and territory. The ONRSR operates within a co-regulatory regime, encouraging greater self-regulation by industry, while at the same time reducing unnecessary regulatory burden, sharing and improving safety practice and developing strong stakeholder relationships.
The role of a Non-executive member is to support the National Rail Safety Regulator in ensuring ONRSR meets the requirements of the Rail Safety National Law. The Non-executive member will assist the Regulator in ensuring sound and robust governance, advise on high profile and sensitive issues, and engage with government, industry and other key stakeholders to support and guide the development and application of the national co-regulatory framework. The estimated time commitment is 40 – 45 days per annum.
The ONRSR is seeking interest from individuals with senior government experience and exposure to the transportation or safety and regulatory environments, with demonstrated abilities to work through complex issues in a multi-jurisdiction environment. Candidates will need to evidence high levels of professional ethics and integrity, independent judgment, exceptional stakeholder engagement skills, and a genuine interest in ONRSR’s mission.
